β-arbutin VS α- arbutin.
1) α- arbutin does not exist in nature and can only be produced by fermentation.
2) The extracted arbutin is not α-arbutin, because α-arbutin does not exist in nature.
3) α- arbutin and β-arbutin are epimers with very close physical and chemical properties. The simplest and most direct way to judge whether a product is α-arbutin is to detect its optical rotation. The optical rotation of α-arbutin is positive (+174.0~+184.0), while that of β-arbutin is negative (-64 ~-).
4) β- arbutin has been used in the market for a long time, so the arbutin is generally called β-arbutin instead of α-arbutin.
